Garden Community Room
Ashford Borough Council is bringing a small community hub to Chilmington Green. This venue, approx. 60sqm, will be a meeting point for residents, one of the first community spaces to arrive in the development. Building on the concept of the urban room, the Garden Community Room will respond to a rural setting with activities and programmes created with local people.
Uniquely there is an opportunity to make the space off or partially off grid so that sustainable energy sources can be used. Other technologies are being explored including rainwater harvesting and composting toilets.
Early themes for the programming of the space include:
- A meeting point for neighbours, organising events and workshops
- Space to sit with tea/coffee and to learn about the planning of the Garden Community, the early history of the area and its future proposals
- Craft materials, colourful boards, blocks, upcycled objects etc. for model making, drawing, communicating
- Further opportunities to engage with sustainable energy production, water management and food growing on the surrounding land
Two public workshops over the months of January and February 2023 invite people to engage with the project and to influence the design proposals. Below are links to the materials shared at these events.
